Biography

After graduating from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Patrick attended California Western School of Law in San Diego, California. He worked in the Washoe County Public Defender's Office as Chief Appellate Deputy practicing before the Nevada Supreme Court. In 1982 he joined the Office of Federal Public Defender for the District of Nevada. In 1987, he appeared before the United States Supreme Court in a landmark death penalty case, Sumner v. Shuman. In1988, he was lead counsel in one of the nation's largest criminal trials. U.S. v. Baker. In 1989, he joined Beckley Singleton DeLanoy Jemison & List as a trial and appellate lawyer working in state and federal courts. In 1998, he joined Hale Lane Peek Dennison and Howard where he continued an active trial and appellate practice. In 1992, Patrick was elected Chair of the Litigation Section of the Federal Bar Association. In 1996, he was elected to the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Nevada. In 1999, he was elected President of the Washoe County Bar Association and in June 2003, Patrick was elected President of the State Bar of Nevada.

Patrick was appointed Chair of the State Bar Access to Justice Committee working to develop delivery of legal services to poor and underrepresented Nevadans. He helped drafted changes to the Nevada Supreme Court Rules enabling lawyers and judges to actively participate in the support of pro bono legal services. He served as President of the Board of Washoe Legal Services and on Federal and State Court Committees to improve the administration of justice and court operations.

Patrick served as School Board President and on the Parish Council of Our Lady of Snows. He was President of the Reno Tennis Club for many years. He enjoyed hiking, running, skiing, fencing and martial arts. In 2001, Patrick suffered a bicycle accident which paralyzed him as a quadriplegic. Upon his release from the hospital, Patrick resumed martial arts training. In June 2003, after a three day test in his wheelchair before 5,000 people in the Santa Clara University Gym he was awarded his 3rd Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.

In 2006, Patrick was elected to Department 7 as Second Judicial District Court Judge for the State of Nevada. He was re-elected in 2008 without opposition. He has been highly rated in the Washoe County Bar Association's Judicial Survey. He is committed to serving the citizens of Washoe County and the State of Nevada.
