Biography

Judge Sattler was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He moved to Northern Nevada with his family when he was three. He was raised in Carson City and Sparks where he attended public schools. Judge Sattler attended Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Political Science and minor in Economics. He remained at Willamette University for law school and earned a Juris Doctorate degree. Judge Sattler was a member of the Willamette University Law Review and was recognized for outstanding work in the area of Products Liability and Consumer Protection.

Judge Sattler was an associate in the law firm of DG Menchetti, Ltd. located in Incline Village, North Lake Tahoe, Nevada following his admission to the bar in Nevada. The firm has a diversified practice to include real estate law, civil litigation (both plaintiff and defense), gaming law, estate planning, business law, family law and criminal defense. The firm represented numerous government boards and agencies.

In 1993 Judge Sattler accepted a position as a criminal prosecutor in the Washoe County District Attorney's Office. He remained a prosecutor until appointed to the bench in 2013 by Governor Brian Sandoval. During his career as a prosecutor, he established a reputation as a firm and fair public servant dedicated to the protection of his community. He was a Senior Trial Deputy and one of seven attorneys assigned to the "homicide rotation" which was responsible for the prosecution of all murder cases that occurred in Washoe County. Judge Sattler was a prosecutor on many of Reno's most high profile cases including The State of Nevada v. James Biela (the "Brianna Denison" murder trial), The State of Nevada v. Valerie Moore (the Mizpah Hotel fire resulting in the death of twelve people and twelve murder convictions) and The State of Nevada v. John Gillane (a disgruntled Wal-Mart employee who held his managers hostage and shot them). He has prosecuted all forms of major felony matters, including death penalty litigation, murder, sexual assault, armed robbery, drug trafficking, million dollar white collar crimes and kidnapping. Judge Sattler did not lose a jury trial between February of 1997 and his appointment to the bench.

Judge Sattler has lectured or led continuing legal education programs in numerous areas of the law. He has taught ethics to public attorneys. He has lectured on substance abuse and mental health issues confronting attorneys and their responsibility to the public and to each other. The Judge has instructed his peers in the areas of death penalty litigation, elderly law and Constitutional law. Judge Sattler designed the Early Case Resolution ("ECR") program in 1997. ECR streamlined the way that cases were prosecuted in Washoe County. ECR saved the taxpayers millions of dollars and assisted defendants by moving them quickly through the criminal justice system. The program has been adopted by numerous other jurisdictions. He was recognized by the Reno Rotary as an Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer. Judge Sattler was certified as an Arson Investigator and specialized in arson prosecution.

Judge Sattler is a past President of the Washoe County Bar Association. He is a current member of the Board of Directors for Washoe Legal Services which provides free legal representation to qualified people in our community. He was on the State Bar of Nevada Transition Into Practice ("TIP") Committee. TIP changed the way that new admittees to the bar were brought into the practice of law and emphasized a "mentor/mentee" approach. Mentors had to meet rigorous ethical and professional standards. Judge Sattler was one of the inaugural mentors approved by the Nevada Supreme Court. He is currently the Co-Chairman of the Washoe County Criminal Justice Advisory Committee ("CJAC") and is a member of the Second Judicial District Court Civil Bench Bar Committee.

Judge Sattler and his wife are raising their daughter in Reno. He volunteers his time as a judge in local and state high school mock trial competitions and constitutional law competitions. The Judge enjoys reading history, listening to jazz from the 1940's and 1950's, and working in his yard.
